JOHN D'ANGELICO (1905-1964) built arch-top guitars and mandolins and is universally regarded as the finest archtop guitar pioneer that ever lived.
D'Angelico instruments were strictly hand made, in limited quantities. In the late 1930s, when production was at its peak, D'Angelico was able to make approximately 35 instruments per year with the help of two or three workers. During 32 years of production and innovation a total of 1,164 guitars were produced.
This auction features a Style B model produced in late 1938. This museum quality instrument is completely original and excellent for it's age with no cracks or repairs. The only minor flaw is a missing pearl block inlay (see photos). All parts are original and it comes with it's original GEIB (Chicago) case. The case has a replaced handle but the original handle is in the storage compartment of the case.
Serial number: 1372, stamped inside back. This guitar is listed in D'Angelico's ledger as completed on December 1, 1938.
Finish: Sunburst finish, nitrocellulose lacquer type
